Quartz is the most common mineral found in rocks.
Composed of silicon dioxide, it is often colorless or white, but can be colored by impurities or radiation, resulting in colored quartz. Citrine, when untreated, is rare and there are few well-formed specimens, so amethyst (purple quartz) is often heated to turn yellow, resulting in heat-treated citrine. Smoky quartz is believed to contain aluminum ions and to have been naturally irradiated, while rose quartz (pink quartz) is believed to contain extremely fine rutile inclusions that scatter light to produce its color.
